In some rare instances, blood pressure may drop too low. Hypotension or low pressure can be life threatening if it falls to extremely low levels. Chronic low blood pressure which is below normal but not at hazardous levels is fairly commonplace.
cause of low blood pressure
signs and symptoms of low blood pressure can result from various factors. Causes include high blood pressure medications, complications of diabetes, and the second trimester of pregnancy. Some older adults especially those on medication for high blood pressure may be at risk of falling or fainting after eating a meal caused by a drop in blood pressure.
When a person is nauseated, faint, or has a severe hemorrhage the blood pressure falls. A friend of mine fainted one morning at work while she was pregnant. She was feeling sick and had not eaten anything for breakfast.
Low blood pressure may follow a long continued infection. Certain diseases that attack the glands which keep the blood pressure normal may cause a continuous low blood pressure.
Low Blood Pressure Symptoms Effects
A potentially dangerous side effect of chronic low blood pressure is postural hypotension. The symptoms of low blood pressure is a feeling of dizziness or faintness when you stand too quickly. Normally, when we stand, the force of gravity causes blood to pool in the legs. This action produces a sudden drop in blood pressure. Usually, the system that regulates blood pressure counteracts the decrease almost simultaneously. Under normal conditions, upon standing, the blood vessels narrow to increase the volume of blood flow from the heart.
If your blood pressure is chronically low, it takes longer for the body to respond to a change in pressure. Postural hypotension is more common with advanced age as nerve signals and regulatory system responses slow. A danger of low blood pressure is that you will become too dizzy, or lose consciousness which could result in a fall and physical injuries. In general, low blood pressure favors a long life but it is not likely associated with physical vigor.
Low Blood Pressure Remedies Treatment
Avoid problems of falling or passing out when your blood pressure drops too low by holding on to something while standing and move slowly. Wait a few seconds after standing before trying to walk to give your body ample time to adjust to the change in pressure. Cross your legs and squeeze your thighs together like a scissors when you stand to help reduce blood flow to the legs.
If you experience low blood pressure symptoms such as falling or fainting, particularly after eating, take preventative action. Eat smaller meals and chew your food slowly. Rest for a bit after your meal.
Medical Treatment
An acquaintance of mine whom suffers from high blood pressure once developed dangerously low blood pressure by taking the wrong prescription medicine by mistake. He began feeling very sleepy and could hardly stay awake to drive his car. He drove into a grocery store to check his blood pressure in the pharmacy waiting area where a monitor was located. His blood pressure had dropped to 108/39! He was taken to the emergency room and given IV drugs to raise his blood pressure to normal levels.
Visit your doctor if you experience symptoms of low blood pressure such as persistent dizziness or fainting.
