Identity and Self Esteem

Many experts on identity and self esteem building advise that the key is to take responsibility for your own actions. Although it is easier said than done, the first steps are to cease placing blame, resist making excuses, and realize that no one can make the necessary changes in your life but you!

People with a gentle manner sometimes experience identity and self esteem difficulties. It is possible to learn ways of completely commanding attention from others using quiet strength. Some people think that having high self esteem means that you think that you are always right. However, it is not about being right.

Identity and self esteem is about being able to act until your goals are met. Self esteem is frequently defined as the ability to believe and feel competent to cope with the daily struggles in life. Too often, people become bogged down by past failures and are unable to act when new opportunities arise. In the future, if you feel at a loss, make a list of all the talents you do possess. It is confidence in your abilities, of making appropriate choices, and responding effectively to changes that define your identity and self esteem.

Your identity and self esteem are based on knowing that you are capable and deserving of happiness. Identity is based on the unique characteristics that establish your individual personality. By facing challenges and achieving set goals, self esteem is developed. Without the responsibility of actions and making decisions, self esteem cannot develop. Taking credit for the good things that happen in your life is an important step in realizing that you have the power to change.

To help build self esteem, allow yourself to feel empowered by your achievements. Remember that you achieved the goals through your own efforts. Keep in mind the need to be flexible. Trying to be perfect is admirable but realize that everyone makes mistakes. Striving to be the ideal parent, spouse, employee, or friend can lead to unnecessary stress.

Think positively. Nothing tears down your self esteem faster than thinking to yourself that there is not a thing you can do to change your predicament. Take steps to think in a more positive way such as focusing on what you can do! Learn to replace pessimistic thoughts with more positive thinking.

Change the voice in the back of your head that tells you, "You can't"! Do not give in to negative self-talk. Make a conscious choice to switch from exaggerated statements to more realistic ones. For instance, instead of continually commenting to yourself, "all my plans are ruined", substitute thoughts such as, "I can make other arrangements that will possibly turn out even better!"

Discuss your feeling with someone you trust. Aside from a friend or family member, find a support group. Sometimes all a person needs that is struggling with identity and self esteem is to be heard. Try to stay away from people that bring you down, at least until you feel stronger to deal with them. You can lift yourself up by taking on new challenges that will build your confidence and make you feel more successful.

For example, many people struggle with personal debt. The first step needs to be re-establishing a sense of ownership. Face the facts as how you got into this predicament in order to react positively and make the necessary changes such as in your spending habits.
