Ideal Blood Pressure
What is the ideal blood pressure reading? First, you need to understand what blood pressure is. The heart pumps by exerting pressure on the blood inside its chambers. Unoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs to receive oxygen before returning to the heart. Oxygenated blood is pumped to the rest of the body. The force of each beat is your blood pressure. When you work harder, your blood pressure increases as your heart works harder. Likewise, when you are at rest, your heart doesn't beat as fast or as hard, resulting in a lower blood pressure. Blood pressure readings provide two numbers. The systolic, or top number measures the maximum pressure exerted on the walls of your blood vessels when your heart beats. The diastolic, or bottom number measures the minimum pressure exerted on your blood vessels between beats. Ideally, as an adult your systolic number should be between 100 and 130. Your diastolic number should range between 70 to 90. Anything above those numbers is considered high blood pressure and anything below them is considered low blood pressure. The best things you can do to keep an ideal blood pressure are exercise, eat healthy, handle your stress, and avoid smoking. While each person is different and can tolerate different things, if you handle these four areas, chances are your blood pressure will remain healthy. Exercise doesn't mean you have to spend hours every day working out with a personal trainer. Taking a walk most days of the week is a good start. If you have a dog, walk him every day for at least half an hour. Your heart will appreciate it, and your dog will love you for it. Eating healthy is hard for some. It is difficult to get away from the fast food, fried snacks and sodas. Shop at your local farmer's market when you can. Stock up on fresh greens, fruits and vegetables. Have a salad every night with your dinner; it's a great place to start. Use dark leafy greens like spinach and leaf lettuce. Iceberg has crunch and very few nutrients. Eat as many of your foods with as little processing as possible. Pre-processed foods in a box have very few nutrients left. Stress can be a killer. Find ways to limit your stress or ways to deal with it. Some people enjoy walking as stress relief... it's also good exercise, so there is one thing you can do that is doubly good for you. Some people relax by listening to music or reading. Others find they enjoy meditating. Whatever works for you, go for it. Smoking not only fills your lungs with toxins, it is a main cause of obstructions forming in your blood vessels. It is a primary cause for many cases of heart disease. If you already smoke, the good news is that when you quit, your body starts healing itself. Over time, your body can do miraculous things which can lead to getting an ldeal blood pressure. Quitting isn't easy, but you can ask your doctor about support groups and various methods that may work for you. If you don't smoke, don't start! Even secondhand smoke can contribute to problems.
